The RYA First Aid course is intended to give boat users a basic understanding of first aid afloat and how and when to call for assistance.

The RYA First Aid course as you will appreciate is predominately aimed at the maritime sector, however it is also suitable for the First Aid in The Work Place. In fact students will cover more on this course than they would on the standard 1 day Emergency First Aid at Work one. Some businesses have seen the benefit of this training and actually prefer it. The syllabus is based on the recommendations of the MCA as well as the HSE!

As for all First Aid training, the certificate is valid for 3 years and also fulfills the requirements for MCA Code of Practice Skippers up to Category 2 (60 miles offshore), Offshore Racers subject to ISAF regulations on First Aid and all practical RYA Instructors. For those wanting to work further than this we also offer the STCW95 Training and Security courses.

What We Cover on the Boatability First Aid Course

  • Managing an Incident - Identify a hazardous situation when dealing with a casualty and knows the methods of obtaining help on land and aboard ship 
  • Understands the Priorities of First Aid - Airway, Breathing, Circulation (ABC) - Primary Survey 
  • Appreciate the benefits of and basic use of a Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) 
  • Can perform External Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) using our resuscitation training dolls 
  • Can perform mouth to mouth resuscitation 
  • Carry out a Secondary Survey 
  • Place a casualty in the Recovery Position 
  • Deal with a drowning / drowned casualty 
  • Identify and treat for Cold water shock and hypothermia 
  • Recognise the signs and and record the levels of response for a head injury
