Safety Boat Training - The MCA Code of Practice for Open Rescue Boats (Under 15mts)

With the introduction of MGN 466 in 2014 all Rescue Boat Helmsmen are now required to be trained as a minimum standard.

The Commercial Safety Boat Training MCA's Marine Guidance Note (MGN 466) Commercial Safety Boat Training  does not apply to rescue boats carried on ships as part of their Life Saving Appliances required under SOLAS or national regulations.

Rescue Boat Helmsmen are now required to be trained as a minimum to the following recognised standards:

  • MCA Elementary First Aid or equivalent 
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 (with 12 months relevant experience) or any other standard which is MCA approved 
  • Basic Sea Survival 
  • RYA Professional Practices & Responsibilities 
  • Medical Fitness 34 Certificate 
  • RYA Advanced or higher (as applicable) 
  • VHF DSC Short Range Certificate 
In addition to the above, all Helmsmen who may operate during the hours of darkness, should also be trained to the the RYA Advanced Power Boat Certificate level or higher, and hold a minimum of 12 months relevant experience
Rescue Centres and Independent lifeboat crews should also ensure that crew members also hold an approved MCA Elementary First Aid Certificate, or equivalent before being able to serve aboard a Rescue Boat.

Please Note

To attend the RYA Advanced Powerboat course as a prerequisite you must hold and be in date for First Aid and hold a VHF Short Range Certificate (DSC) or higher.
