The RYA have developed the First Aid at Sea course, which is specifically aimed small craft and support to skippers of larger vessels. Like the HSE First Aid the certificate is valid for 3 years and is fantastic value for money at just £95 per person. This price also includes the First Aid Manual worth £13. You don’t have to be at sea to use these skills; think, it could be that you are involved in car accident someone at home collapses for some unknown reason etc. Would you know what to do in an emergency?
When you are out at sea you carry the necessary safety equipment, for example a VHF/DSC radio and First Aid kit, and that we are appropriately trained in being able to handle the boat. However, even though we have a First Aid kit aboard a lot of people seem to ignore the possibility that someone could, and do get injured whilst we are out there having fun. That is why as well as ensuring you are happy with operating the boat safely and being able to make a Mayday or Pan Pan call, we strongly recommend that no matter how short the trip, you are also proficient in administering First Aid.
